The beginning of the church of Christ. (Acts 2:1-42)

A. The gathering of believers! (Acts 2:1-2)

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house

where they were sitting. (Acts 2:1-3)

   1. From Acts 1:15 we know there were about 120 believers!

   2. They all gather in one place. (This is unity of the church!)

   3. A sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven.

This was the sound that attracted thousands of people to come!

B. The baptism of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:3-4)

   1. The saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. (Acts 2:3)

   2. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as

the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2:4)

C. Reaction of the God-fearing Jews! (Acts 2:5)

   1. When they heard this sound, they came together in bewilderment,

because each one heard them speaking in his own languages. 2:6

   2. They were very amazed, they asked:

"Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? (Acts 2:6-10)

   3. Both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs-

understand they were declaring the wonders of God in their own tongues. 2:11

Please remember speaking in tongues here means language other people understand

and in their own native tongues!

   4. Some made fun of them and said: They have had too much wine. 2:13

D. Peter stood up with the 11 to address the crowd. (Acts 2:14-36)

   1. This crowd were God-fearing Jews from all over the world and all who live in Jerusalem!

   2. We are from Galilee but we are speaking in your native tongues and you understand what we said,

      therefore, we are not drunk!

   3. This is the fulfillment of what Prophet Joel said in the last days, God says,

I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions,

your old men will dream dreams. (Acts 2:15-20)

E. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Acts 2:21

   What does this mean?

Peter explained in Acts 2:22-35 and he concluded in 2:36 by saying:

Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus whom you crucified,

   both Lord and Christ.

F. The reaction and results of his preaching. (Acts 2:37-41)

   1. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said:

What must we do? Acts 2:37

   2. Peter replied: Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ

for the forgiveness of your sins.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The promise is for you and your children.

With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them,

Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.

   3. The result: Those who accepted his message were baptized, and

about 3000 were added to their number that day. (Acts 2:41)

   4. The baptized people devoted themselves to the apostles

teaching and to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42

This is the beginning of the church of Christ in Jerusalem!
