Superstitious means acts of piety not described in the Bible!
A. Main scriptures for this study: Col.2:6-10
1. Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him,
strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Col.2:6-7
2. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends
on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. Col.2:8
3. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in
Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. Col.2:9-10
B. All acts of superstition destined to perish with use! Col.2:16-22
1. Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival,
a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. Col.2:16
2. Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize.
Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up
with idle notions.Col.2:18
3. He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by
its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow. Col.2:19
4. Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to
it, do you submit to its rules.Col.2:20
5. These are all destined to perish with use. *****
Because they are based on human commands and teachings. Col.2:22
C. What to do with all acts of superstition? Col.3:1-4
1. If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, (teachings written in the bible.)
where Christ sit on the right hand of God. Col.3:1
2. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Col.3:2
3. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. Col.3:3
4. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.Col.3:4
D. People in the church of Christ have all treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Col.2:2-3
1. My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full
riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ.
2. In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Col.2:3
3. Apostle Paul: My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in
demonstration of the Spirit and of power…. 1 Cor.2:4-5
4. Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of
the princes of this world, that come to nothing. 1 Cor.2:6
5. No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our
glory before time began. 1 Cor.2:7
6. God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 1 Cor.2:10
7. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God,
that we may understand what God has freely given us.1 Cor.2:12
8. The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's
judgment. 1 Cor.2:15
9. For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?
But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Cor.2:16
E. Conclusion: Example for illustration! Acts 17:22-31
From Acts 17:22 different translations tell us the definition of superstition.
1. NIV--> Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said:
Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.
2. ASV-->And Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus, and said,
Ye men of Athens, in all things, I perceive that ye are very religious.
3. KJV--> Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said:
Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
