Whose view point do you apply?
Main Scriptures for this study: Matt.16:13-23
A. Jesus rewarded a good hearted act with a harsh rebuke?
1. Jesus asked his disciples: Who do man say that I am? Matt.16:13
2. They replied: Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, Jeremiah or a prophet! Matt.16:14
3. Who do you say that I am? Matt.16:15
4. Peter replied: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Matt.16:16
5. Jesus: Blessed are you Peter, for this was revealed to you by my Father in heaven not by man! 16:17
6. I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Matt.16:18
7. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in
heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Matt.16:19
8. Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ. Matt.16:20
9. From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer
many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be
killed and on the third day be raised to life. Matt.16:21
10. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" *****
He said: This shall never happen to you! Matt.16:22 *****
11. Jesus turned and said to Peter: Get behind me, Satan! Matt.16:23 *****
You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.
B. Understanding the main points of the above Scriptures:
1. Jesus said he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things….
2. He must be killed!
3. On the 3rd day he will be raised to life!
4. Peter’s reaction: Never, Lord, this shall never happen to you!
5. Peter was reasoning on the human view point!
6. Peter was thinking about Jesus’ sufferings and death of the body!
7. He did not understand and pay no attention to this “on the 3rd day be raised to life!”
8. He did not understand what Jesus will get in return ‘an indestructible body’…!
9. He did not understand Jesus lay down his physical life for the salvation of the world. *****
10. Peter did not understand Jesus can lay it down and take it up again! John 10:17
11. Jesus stated the reason for his rebuke:
You do not have in mind the things of God!
You have in mind the things of men!
12. In the original text, Peter was reasoning with man’s view point!
Peter did not reason with God’s view point!
C. Example on man’s view point and God’s view point: Matt.7:21-23
1. Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven,
but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Matt.7:21 *****
2. Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name,
and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Matt.7:22
3. Then I will tell them plainly: I never knew you. Away from me, you evil doers! Matt.7:23
4. Man’s view point: Call Jesus, ‘Lord, Lord’ is good thing!
5. Man’s view point: Preach in Jesus’ name is good thing!
6. Man’s view point cast out demons in the name of Jesus is good thing!
7. Man’s view point do many miracles in Jesus’ name is good thing!
8. In Jesus’ view point these people were evil doers!
D. Conclusion: Select a college, a job, buy a house to live … whose view point do you apply?
1. Make money and enjoy life on earth … are top priority? Be like the devil?
2. Set your affection on things above! Be as perfect as the Father in Heaven is perfect! Col.3:2-3
