Contending against God!

Contending against God!

A. Main scriptures for this study! Ro.2:1-10

1. You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge

the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Ro.2:1

2. Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. Ro.2:2

3. So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things,

do you think you will escape God's judgment? Ro.2:3

4. Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience,

not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance? Ro.2:4

5. But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself

for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. Ro.2:5

6. God "will give to each person according to what he has done." Ro.2:6

7. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 2;7

8. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.2:8

9. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;

but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. Ro.2:9-10

B. Many may think Ro.2:1-5 is similar to Matt.7:1-5!

1. Do not judge or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged,

and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Matt.7:1-2

2. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and

pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? Matt.7:3

3. How can you say to your brother: Let me take the speck out of your eye,

when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? Matt.7:4

4. You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye,

and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. Matt.7:5

C. Correct translation for Ro.2:8 will reveal A. and B. are not similar!

1. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil,

there will be wrath and anger. NIV

2. but unto them that are factious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation, ASV

3. But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth,

but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, KJV

4. This original word here in Ro.2:8 means “contending against God”!  2052

Who were these people and what did they do?

    (1) Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said:

The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to obey the Law of Moses. Ac.15:5

    (2) And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren,

and said: Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. Ac.15:1

***Jewish brothers from Judea rose up to insist:

The saved Gentile people must be circumcised and required to obey the Law of Moses!

D. In what way they were contending against God?

1. Jesus said: He who believes and is baptized shall be saved!  Mk.16:16

They said: Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved! Ac.15:1

2. Jesus said: For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. Matt.11:13

Apostle Paul put it this way:

    (1) Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Ro.10:4

    (2) Jesus believers are no longer under the Law!  Gal.3:22-25

They said: Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved! Ac.15:1

E. In what way people are contending against God nowadays?

1. Denominations are sick head thinking up-side-down!  People insist to be part of denomination!

2. Let there be no denominations among you! 1Cor.1:10

People insist to have their own kinds of denominational church!

3. Contending as one man for the faith of the gospel! Phil.1:27-28

People are contending against God on what says in the Bible!

This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved -- and that by God! Phil.1:28

F. Conclusion: Know this assuredly! Not worship God in church of Christ is contending against God!

May God grant you good health and peace!  Preach this July 26, 2020.
