Scripture for this study: 1 Tim.1:3-11
1. 1:3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus
so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer. NIV
1:3 As I exhorted thee to tarry at Ephesus, when I was going into Macedonia,
that thou mightest charge certain men not to teach a different doctrine. ASV
Questions for study:
a. Do these two translations convey the exact same meaning?
b. Is there any different in command and charge?
c. Is there any difference in meaning between ‘not to teach false
doctrines any longer’ and ‘not to teach a different doctrine’?
d. Do you know of other scripture correspond to this same teaching?
2. 1:4 Nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies.
These promote controversies rather than God's work-- which is by faith.NIV
1:4 Neither to give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questionings,
rather than a dispensation of God which is in faith; ASV.
a. Is there a difference in ‘give heed’ and ‘devote themselves’?
b. What is endless genealogies mean?
c. Is there a difference in ‘promote controversies’ and minister questionings’?
d. Is there a difference in ‘by faith’ and ‘in faith’?
e. Why do you think they translate this way?
3. 1:5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience
and a sincere faith. (NIV)
1:5 But the end of the charge is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience
and faith unfeigned:
a. Do you see any difference in these two translations?
4. 1:6 Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. (NIV)
1:6 from which things some having swerved have turned aside unto vain talking; (ASV)
a. Do you see any difference in these two translations?
5. 1:7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about
or what they so confidently affirm. (NIV)
1:7 desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say,
nor whereof they confidently affirm. (ASV)
a. What is the law mean here?
b. This is the verse that triggered the study of these scriptures!
c. How dangerous it is when a person is confidently affirm what they believe is truly
according to the Bible?
d. Is there any way to help this kinds of people to see the truth?
