Subject: Jesus' "But I tell you".
1. Matt.5:20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law,
you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
2. Matt.5:22
But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.
Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin.
But anyone who says, `You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.
3. Matt.5:28
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
4. Matt.5:32
But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become
an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.
5. Matt.5:34
But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne.
6. Matt.5:39
But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
7. Matt 5:44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
What about the everlasting covenant in the Old Testament?
1. Gen.17:12-14
For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,
including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner-- those who are not your offspring.
Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.
My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.
Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people;
he has broken my covenant."
2. Ex.31:15
For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD.
Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death.
The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant.
It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and
the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested.'"What about the New Testament?
1. Jer.31:31-32
The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when
I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt,
because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them," declares the LORD.
2. Matt.26:28
This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
3. Matt.5:17-19
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets;
I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear,
not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law
until everything is accomplished….
4. Ro.10:4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
5. Ro.7:6
But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that
we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
6. 2 Co.3:6
He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant--
not of letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
7. Col.2:14
Having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us;
he took it away, nailing it to the cross.
May the Lord bless you and keep you!
